I recently calculated my bd May 2nd 1988 as the number 33. It was always calculated as 6. But I’ve been told that it’s indeed 6 and not 33, and I was kinda confused.
But why so many people say that summing all the numbers altogether is not the right method?

I will explain. In numerology it is very important to add the numbers in the birthday separately to allow the master number to come through. Each digit separately. So May 2nd 1988 is added like this. 5+2+1+9+8+8 =33! Do not reduce the numbers before you get the complete sum. When the sum is a double digit with the same number,11/22/33/and rare 44, they are called master numbers and you do not reduce them because it is double the power of that number! You could look at it as 33/6 which is the destiny of mastery in creativity and self expression (the 3s) and service and compassion, the 6. A beautiful destiny, do you feel it? Here is the formula to find your destiny. Add each number of your birth month+birthday+birth year like this.
1+1+7+1+9+9+5 =33
You must follow this formula when calculating the destiny in order to find a master number.
I am not sure how the others got a 24.. but if you use this formula, you will always get a master number if it adds up to one.

This is so accurate for me. My birthdate of 9/23/1981 puts me with a 33 destiny. I have a career in the medical field I am very passionate about. I am happy in my work, content in my home life (minus a life partner who I am sure is on his way), and have abundant energy, which I feel has not yet found its direction. I am definitely more comfortable with the 6 and am a great friend and teacher. I struggle to move out of my comfort zone, but feel this year is preparing me for that!

3+4+1+9+9+7=33 . 33 is not further reduced as the master number is so powerful.
As a numerologist for over 20 years, this is the method I use for my readings and also teach my students. In my view, it is the only way to hold the integrity of the master number. You cannot take any shortcuts. Like adding 1997+7 which would be 2004. 2+4=6.
